For captivity, this means two things: first, alongside a balanced seed and pellet foundation, fresh food belongs in the bowl daily, as these lively South Americans are absolute fans of fruits and vegetables. Second, exercise determines the balance. A caique with plenty of free-flight and playtime metabolizes their ration beautifully. If stimulation is lacking, even in this active species, energy can quickly turn into obesity. Their ration therefore needs to be planned just as carefully as their daily playtime.
