What types of staple food are there?

Not all staple foods are created equal. Which form is right for your bird depends on its species, size, age, and activity level.

Seed Mixes & Grain Mixes

Classic seed mixes are the most natural food base for many seed-eating birds such as budgies, cockatiels, and lovebirds. The correct composition is important: a balanced ratio of low-fat and high-fat seeds, supplemented with herbs and other seeds. Overly fatty mixtures quickly lead to obesity and fatty liver disease – a common problem in pet bird keeping.

Pellets

Pellets (also called extrudates) are a compressed complete feed where each individual pellet contains the same, complete nutrient composition. The advantage: your bird cannot pick out its favorite fatty seeds and leave the rest – a common problem with pure seed feeding. Especially for many large parrots such as macaws, Amazons, and African Greys, pellets are a valuable base or supplement.

Nutri-Berries & Tropimix

The Lafeber Nutri-Berries are a clever bridge between seeds and pellets: whole seeds and grains are gently bound into balls. Your bird has the natural incentive to nibble on them and keep busy, while consuming a balanced mixture. Products like Hari Tropimix also combine seeds with additional components, providing variety in the bowl.

The right staple food for your bird species

Each bird species has its own needs. Our product range is therefore clearly categorized by species:

• Budgies need a low-fat, finely tuned seed mix – such as our Dr. Bürkle Budgie Special or Extra.
• Cockatiels and Lovebirds are in between in terms of size and benefit from specially formulated mixtures.
• Large parrots such as macaws, African Greys, Amazons, noble parrots, and cockatoos have the highest demands. Here, a combination of seed mix, pellets, and Nutri-Berries is often worthwhile.
• You will also find suitable staple food for canaries, exotics, and chickens.

• Freshness: Seeds lose their germinative capacity and nutritional value over time. Look for fresh goods and store them in a dry, cool place protected from pests.
• Fat content: Prefer a low-fat basic mixture and targeted fatty seeds as treats, rather than constantly feeding overly energy-rich food.
• Variety instead of monotony: A varied base covers the nutritional spectrum better than a one-sided mixture.
• Gentle transition: If you want to switch from pure seeds to pellets, do so gradually. Birds are creatures of habit; initially, mix the new component into the familiar food in small quantities only.
